Theme

Extra Chilli Megaways is set in a Mexican street market, and the gameplay area is a cart-style market stall adorned with garlic and chillis. Other stalls make up the background, and graphically it is on par with its predecessor Bonanza Megaways. The symbols are well-drawn and clear enough to distinguish from each other. Disappointingly, the lower-paying symbols are standard playing card values from 9 to A, and if you’ve read my other reviews, you’ll know this is a bugbear of mine as I consider it lazy. However, in this case, I don’t think they harm the overall look of the game, and I do think Big Time Gaming have done well here and have managed to create something original. All in all, I like the theme and it certainly gives the vibe it sets out to.

Soundtrack

I think Big Time Gaming have nailed it when it comes to the soundtrack of this game. It has a very upbeat backing track to it as you spin the reels, and the incidental sounds that accompany the wins make you think of Mexico…Or at least a stereotypical view of it! The soundtrack compliments the theme beautifully and you can’t help but feel quite upbeat when playing it. I would add a bit of caution to that though, and you should remember that the slot is highly volatile. It can therefore rip through your bankroll and feel like it’s giving you a high-five at the same time!

Gameplay

The gameplay on Extra Chilli Megaways feels slick, and it does well enough without a quick spin feature. However, the game relies heavily on its bonus feature to add to the excitement, and unlike Danger High Voltage, or Lil’ Devil, you won’t find any multiplying wilds. This can leave the wins feeling very few and far between. However, the reaction feature does break things up a little, and you can build a half-decent run of wins. I’ve previously panned Lil’ Devil for being dull, and maybe it’s just personal preference, but I feel that Extra Chilli Megaways is a lot more playable. Maybe its because of its cheery soundtrack as it’s ripping through your bankroll. Who knows!

Entertainment Value

Like the gameplay, I do feel that most of the entertainment comes from the bonus feature. The gamble feature on the free spins can be brutal, but the reward of achieving 24 free spins and watching the multiplier soar is well worth it. Yes, the game is all about the bonus, but Big Time Gaming have made it great, and it’s a big improvement on the bonus in Bonanza in my opinion. Extra Chilli will keep you entertained enough to stick around for the elusive bonus, and the best part is that it will keep you coming back to see how far you can take that multiplier. It’s therefore hard to slate a game that makes you want to return so much. Top marks therefore for the entertainment value!

There is no doubt that Extra Chill Megaways is not for the faint-hearted or for anyone concerned too much about their bankroll. If you’re planning a slot session, then I would recommend building a decent balance first before coming to this game. I would also recommend buying the bonus if you’re outside the UK and your balance allows it because I feel the cost is probably less than what it would be to land it naturally. That’s just my experience!

Overall, the game has a great theme, and a soundtrack that complements it. It has slick enough gameplay to keep you interested, and a bonus feature that will keep you entertained. Its biggest plus is that it will leave you wanting more!
