Pharaoh’s Fortune Slot Review

by | May 1, 2023 | Slots

Pharaoh’s Fortune is an extremely popular land-based casino slot that has been transferred to the online slot world. Produced by IGT, this 5 reel Egyptian classic features 15 paylines in the base game and has its own soundtrack courtesy of The Bangles 80’s track “Walk Like an Egyptian.” The slot features a free spin bonus where you can increase your multiplier and amount of free spins.

The online version of the game comes with a very respectable RTP of 96.53% and is classed as a medium in terms of volatility– although I would argue it’s on the high side. The base game has 15 paylines, but this increases to 20 during the free spin bonus. Either way, the wins are frequent and for the most part evenly split in terms of size.

Pharaoh’s Fortune can be played online with stakes ranging from 15p to a whopping £450, and the game has a maximum of 10,000 x wins. With its upbeat backing tune, will Pharaoh’s Fortune leave you walking like an Egyptian, or hopping mad? I’ve really been looking forward to this one, so let’s find out in our Pharaoh’s Fortune slot review!

Pharaoh’s Fortune Slot Stakes & Stats

The Pharaoh’s Fortune slot has 5 reels, with 3 rows and 15 paylines in the base game. Winning combinations are made by matching symbols on at least reels 1 – 3, but as with most slots, the scatters can fall anywhere to create a win. The game features pyramid wild symbols that substitute for all other symbols apart from the scatters.

Most casinos will allow bet sizes that range from 15p to £450, but the online versions we’ve tested do not allow you to adjust the number of paylines.

Pharaoh’s Fortune only has one bonus feature which is achieved by landing 3 of the pharaoh’s mask symbols. Once you do this, you’ll start with 3 free spins at a 1 x multiplier. However, you then get to pick different stones from a hieroglyph-covered wall that will rotate to reveal extra spins, more multipliers, or start the bonus.

The RTP on Pharaoh’s Fortune is 96.53% which is very respectable for an online slot. Most will say that game has medium volatility, but I think it’s edging on the high side.

Bonus Features

Pharaoh’s Fortune only has one bonus feature which is achieved by landing 3 of the pharaoh’s mask symbols on a payline (reels 1 – 3.) Once you do this, you’ll start with 3 free spins at a 1 x multiplier. However, you then get to pick different stones from a hieroglyph-covered wall that will rotate to reveal extra spins, more multipliers, or start the bonus.

You begin the bonus with your allotted free spins and multiplier. The paylines will also increase from 15 to 20, and the reel symbols change too. For example, the Scarab Beetle scatter becomes a Sphinx who taps his feet when he lands, and the pyramid wild is replaced by a Pharaoh wearing shades! You’ll also have the chance of re-triggers if you manage to land 3 of the pharaoh’s masks anywhere on reels 1 – 3. If you do that, then you’ll get the same amount of spins and multipliers that you started the bonus with.

The Pharaoh’s Fortune Slot

Okay, I must be honest: I absolutely love this slot! However, I also absolutely hate it too! Confused? Well, that pretty much sums up my feelings for it, but I’ll explain and it will make more sense.

Firstly, the look and feel of Pharaoh’s Fortune is great. The soundtrack is great, and so too is the gameplay etc. I’ll break that down more later because that’s not what gives me mixed feelings. What causes my love and hate comes with the bonus, and I’m sure my feelings are shared with many who I’ve seen playing the game in land-based casinos. Put simply, you wait for what seems like an eternity to land the bonus, only to pick the first stone and it reveals the ‘Begin Free Spin Bonus.’ You then play out your miserable 3 spins at a 1 x ‘multiplier.’ This drives me insane! I’ve seen others playing, and you can actually see their souls being destroyed when this happens.

Fortunately, there is a flip side to this if you’re lucky. If you manage to avoid the ‘Begin Free Spin Bonus’ stone for long enough, you can rack up 25 free spins with a 6 x multiplier. There is also a retrigger chance too. This is where the love comes in!

Picking the stones can be tense, especially if you get off to a good start. However, if you’re scuppered from the outset, you’ll likely feel compelled to stick around for another go. Be warned though, because the bonus can be difficult to land and this slot can destroy your balance quite quickly!

Pharaoh’s Fortune is billed as a medium volatility slot, and to its credit, it does actually deliver a decent amount of big wins in both the base game and bonus. However, the reason I say that it’s verging on the high side of volatility is simply down to the fact that the bonus can be difficult to land. Couple that with just 3 spins and a 1 x multiplier (if you’re unlucky,) and it really could leave you cursing! This has happened to me more times than I can count, but I’ve also had my fair share of decent wins too. A true love/hate relationship!

Theme

I’ve lost track of how many Egyptian-themed slots there are in online or land-based casinos. However, Pharaoh’s Fortune is one of the originals and the best. Sure, it’s looking dated but that’s definitely part of its charm, and IGT has nailed the theme impeccably. I would not say that it’s stunning to look at, but it is firmly in keeping with the Egyptian theme and the ancient aesthetic does come across well.

When you load the game, you’re presented with a gameplay area set in stone. It has a golden colour and familiar Egyptian-style hieroglyphics. Unlike many similar slots, you’ll not see playing card symbols making up the lower payouts and IGT has clearly made the effort to not include anything that undermines the Egyptian vibe. This is a huge plus for me as I mention my dislike of playing card symbols a lot in my reviews!

Another huge plus in terms of the theme is the effort that IGT has made in animating the symbols. Most appear basic, but it definitely makes the game more immersive, and they have added sound effects too. If you consider that Pharaoh’s Fortune is now many years old, it is clear they went the extra mile! Overall, it’s a great score from me for the theme element.

Soundtrack

If I was designing an Egyptian-themed slot, I would be hard-pressed to come up with a better soundtrack that “Walk Like an Egyptian” by The Bangles. I think IGT really lucked out with this, and I also wonder what royalty deal The Bangles got out of it!

When you play the slot, you’ll notice the looping guitar riff from the song, and it’s not at all irritating. It’s upbeat and fun which is what the slot is all about. When you hit the bonus, you’re then treated to the original vocals from the song which further adds to the authenticity of the theme. It doesn’t really matter if you’re a fan of The Bangles, or the actual song, because IGT has executed it in such a way to make it sit alongside the visuals without it overpowering them. What takes it a step further is the addition of their own sound effects to the symbol animations. These are often amusing to watch and listen to, and they complement the main soundtrack perfectly.

Combined with the theme, the soundtrack is excellent and it’s another big score for Pharaoh’s Fortune!

Gameplay

If there’s one thing to let Pharaoh’s Fortune down, it would be the gameplay. It’s not bad exactly, it’s just that it’s not great. It doesn’t seem to have transferred that well from the land-based version where you’ll often see a remastered version that’s slick to play. The online version feels a little clunky and slow. There wasn’t an autoplay function in the version I tested for this review, which is lacking from its land-based counterpart, and you can’t do quick spins. This may be an issue for those who are more impatient, especially when you consider it’s a bit slow and the bonus can be a little elusive to land.

From a win distribution perspective, you will find plenty of bigger base game hits, but I think IGT have weighted it a little too much in favour of the base game to the detriment of the bonus frequency. It all depends on what motivates you to keep playing, but personally, I like the excitement of a decent bonus feature. When this doesn’t happen as often as I think it should, I can get a little frustrated.

Just another minor point, but I also think that the symbols are a little confusing in the bonus feature because they all look quite similar. That’s just a minor gripe though!

So for me, Pharaoh’s Fortune loses a few points for the clunky gameplay and elusive bonus. It still scores above average though and there are definitely worse slots out there for gameplay!

Entertainment Value

Pharaoh’s Fortune may only have one bonus feature, and it may be old, but it still has stacks of entertainment value. It’s hard to play it and not enjoy the atmosphere it creates both visually and with the audio. I do think you should exercise some caution with it because it can be so enjoyable that you just might lose yourself in it even when losing.

This slot does have a decent RTP but remember that it is medium-high in terms of volatility. Despite that, you should find plenty of wins to be had to keep you entertained. All things considered, I think this slot scores well above average in terms of its entertainment value, and you’re almost certain to have fun playing.

Conclusion

So, we have a great theme, a fantastic soundtrack, gameplay that’s a bit dodgy but still good, and cracking entertainment. All in all, I think Pharaoh’s Fortune will be a great addition to your playlist. I’ve been playing this slot for well over 7 years and it’s driven me mad on occasion but more often than not given me some fantastic wins. Overall it deserves a high score and I hope you think so too!

Enjoy! 🙂
