White Rabbit Slot Review

by | Aug 3, 2023 | Big Time Gaming, Slots

White Rabbit is an online slot developed by the incredibly popular Australian developer Big Time Gaming. It has become a firm favourite with fans and it’s another in the Megaways series of slots that gained a massive following since the release of Bonanza Megaways back in 2016.

White Rabbit is based on characters created by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, and it offers up to 16,807 ways to win in the base game, plus a whopping 248,832 ways to win in the free spin bonus. The game also features a caterpillar bonus that can add wild multipliers to the base game, and the ability to buy the main bonus for players outside the UK. White Rabbit also has the feature drop coins which you may well have seen on other Big Time Gaming slots, which basically reduces the price you pay for a bonus; but more on that later. The slot has a maximum 17,420X stake win along with an unusually high RTP. I have tested this slot extensively, but is it worthy of the hype? Answers are coming in our White Rabbit slot review!

White Rabbit Slot Stakes & Stats

White Rabbit is played over 5 reels with up to 16,807 Megaways in the base game. However, this can be increased to a massive 248,832 in the free spin bonus. You can bet from as little as 10p per spin, up to £20. The game features traditional playing card symbols that range from 9 to A, and they make up the lower-paying values.  It also has premium symbols that include different coloured gems, the Queen of Hearts, and an Alice Wild that substitutes for all symbols except scatters. Speaking of the scatter symbol, you’ll find him easy to spot as he takes the form of the March Hare. You’ll need to land 3 scatters to trigger the bonus in the normal way.

Wins in the game are paid from left to right, and you’ll normally need to match 3 on adjacent reels. However, the Queen of Hearts will pay for just 2 and is the highest paying symbol that can reach 25X if you land 10. An interesting feature is that the lower-paying symbols transform into characters when they are stacked. For example, a stacked 9 becomes a teacup symbol, the 10 becomes a teapot, the Jack becomes the Mad Hatter, the Queen becomes a Dodo, the King transforms into the Evil Twins, whilst the Ace transforms into a grinning Cheshire Cat.

The White Rabbit slot does have an unusually high RTP of 97.24, but this is matched with a high volatility meaning that your best chance of winning big will most likely come from the free spin bonus.

Finally, you’ll be able to take advantage of the autoplay feature where you can set the number of spins along with win/loss limits. As with other Big Time Gaming slots, you’ll notice that there is no quick spin function. I’m not sure whether Big Time Gaming will ever change their position on this but basically, they say that they don’t include the feature so players get the most enjoyment of the slot at a slower pace.

White Rabbit has a massive win potential even if you don’t land a retrigger, but landing the bonus without buying it can be tricky.

White Rabbit Bonus Triggered

The White Rabbit Slot Bonuses

The White Rabbit slot has one main bonus which consists of free spins. The game does have a couple of other features which I’ll discuss shortly, but the main attraction to the game is the free spins which are awarded when you land 3 March Hare scatters on reels 2,3, and 4. If you manage to do this, you will be awarded 15 free spins and the gameplay area will appear as though you have fallen down a rabbit hole. You’ll be playing with the same 5 reels, but in the bonus, they have the ability to expand. How do they do this? With cupcakes of course!

When you land an ‘Eat Me’ cupcake, you’ll see the reel expand by one and you’ll see the number appear on screen. This basically relates to how many symbols are present on the reel at the same time. The idea is to get to 12 on any one of the reels and this will cause a retrigger. The March Hare’s pocket watch will appear and the hands will move around the watch to award more free spins. The ultimate goal is to have all 5 reels with 12 symbols to gain the maximum 248,832 Megaways. If that happens you will most likely leave the game with a substantial win.

You should note that the retriggers are very difficult to come by. Whilst testing for this review, I played through 15 different bonuses and didn’t manage it once. That being said, I have seen all 5 reels with the maximum Megaways so it is definitely possible! Another point to note is that the bonus feature can have better starts than others. For example, as a starting point, the minimum amount of symbols a reel can have is 5. That means you will have to land a cupcake 7 times on that particular reel to retrigger the bonus. In short, the more Megaways your bonus starts with should theoretically increase your chance of a retrigger. You can watch the video below to get a better idea of how the bonus plays out.

White Rabbit Caterpillar Bonus

Caterpillar Bonus

You probably won’t notice him at first, but sitting behind the bonus buy section just to the left of the main gameplay area is a sleeping caterpillar. He gets triggered at random during any base game spin and will wake up and blow a smoke ring onto the reels. When this lands it turns a symbol (or symbols) wild and gives a multiplier of either 2X or 3X. He can land up to 4 bonus wilds but I have yet to see more than 2. In fact, it’s usually just the one wild symbol that is uselessly placed on reel 5! In my experience, the caterpillar just adds frustration to the proceedings, but you may get lucky.

White Rabbit Slot Feature Buy & Bonus Drop

The White Rabbit slot gives you the option to buy the bonus if you’re outside the UK. The starting price for this is 100X your stake, but this can reduce throughout normal base gameplay when you land one of the special coins. If you do, you’ll see the coin go into the Feature Drop slot and reduce the price accordingly. The amount of reduction you get depends on the size of the coin you land but it can be a maximum of 2X your stake.

Theme

You’ll find the White Rabbit slot to have a bit of a weird feel to it. Like many Big Time Gaming slots, it doesn’t exactly scream high definition. That being said, it is well drawn and a lot of thought has clearly gone into the design. The main play area is translucent and set against a fairytale-style forest background. The design is colourful and certainly lends itself well to the Alice in Wonderland aesthetic that it sets out to achieve.

Normally I slate slots for using the playing card symbols but it actually works with this game, and it’s even nicer that Big Time Gaming have put more thought into this by making the lower-paying symbols change to characters when stacked. I would say that the game retains originality, even if this isn’t the only Alice in Wonderland-themed slot on the market, and the Megaways add a fantastic dynamic to the game. All things considered, I can’t really knock it from a theme point of view at least.

Soundtrack

For me, the right soundtrack really can make a good slot great, and I think the sounds you hear in this game add a lot of value to it. You’ll hear birds tweeting in the background, the occasional strum of a harp, and the ticking of a watch set against a mystical undertone. This is continuous and unobtrusive. However, more life is added to it when you click the spin button, and you’ll then hear an almost psychedelic-style tune as the reels spin. Come to think of it, what exactly is the caterpillar smoking when he blows smoke rings onto the reels? Were the good folks at Big Time Gaming tripping out a little when they designed this game? Whatever the case, they did a great job with the soundtrack, and it definitely complements the theme. And like any great soundtrack, you don’t really notice it unless you pay close attention to it. That’s how it should be.

The White Rabbit Slot Gameplay

So if White Rabbit is going to start to fall down anywhere, it’s on the gameplay. We already know that the slot has a high volatility, but I do think Big Time Gaming tends to take this a little too far in many of their slots. It’s great that you can get yourself some fantastic wins in the bonus, but it’s not so great when you can grow a beard while waiting to land one! Sure, you can buy it (and I highly recommend you do unless you have nothing else better to do with your month,) but not everyone has that luxury especially if you’re in the UK! If you are unable to buy the bonus then I feel you may become bored of this game very quickly. That would be a shame because it is actually decent. Whether or not it will be worth your wait is only really something you can decide depending on your level of patience.

So the base game doesn’t really deliver big wins, the bonus can take decades to land, and the caterpillar (who I’ve now decided is smoking a crack pipe,) adds very little value to the gameplay. With all that in mind, I’m afraid White Rabbit loses a good chunk of points with regard to gameplay.

Entertainment Value

You can probably see where I’m going with this since I’ve just slated White Rabbit’s gameplay. For all of the reasons discussed, I’m afraid White Rabbit again loses points. There is little doubt that the bonus itself is entertaining, and to its credit, it takes quite a while to play out meaning that you leave it thinking you’ve had a decent shot.

More often than not, you’ll leave the bonus with a decent amount, and if you do buy it, then you do stand a good chance of at least covering the outlay. However, I don’t feel that the bonus alone is enough to carry this slot and it doesn’t exactly leave you wanting more. Therefore, it’s not a great score for White Rabbit’s entertainment value.

White Rabbit Slot Review Conclusion

White Rabbit definitely isn’t the worst slot I‘ve played from Big Time Gaming, and it does have a certain charm. If you’re lucky enough to be able to buy a White Rabbit bonus, then I would say it’s well worth giving a shot. However, if you can’t buy the bonus, I would probably give this game a miss…Unless you have the patience of a saint. The RTP probably means it won’t rip through your balance as quickly as other slots might, but the volatility means it will probably bore you to tears long before you get any decent excitement from it. There are plenty of other slots that will give more of a thrill for your money.

Pros:

  • Great Theme & Soundtrack
  • Unusual and immersive bonus
  • High RTP

Cons:

  • Bonus extremely difficult to land if not bought
  • Retriggers for the best wins are rare
  • Potentially high boredom factor
